NERVE HYDRODISSECTION

Relieving Nerve Pain Without Surgery

Eliminating pain by relieving the pressure on nerves

Nerves are supposed to glide smoothly around surrounding tissue, but entrapped nerves can be stuck or adhered to the surrounding tissue. Nerve irritation can occur in areas where the nerve travels through a canal or tunnel or because of trauma and scar tissue formation that leads to symptoms such as numbness, paralysis, weakness and pain. Nerve hydrodissection treatment can relieve these symptoms. Releasing the pressure on nerves not only alleviates pain but allows the nerves to regenerate.

Nerve hydrodissection can be an alternative to surgery for some people. Using ultrasound guidance, we can identify the nerves causing pain and guide the needle next to the nerve. Once the needle tip nears the nerve, fluid is injected around the nerve to free the nerve from surrounding tissues. This can have the same resolution of numbness, tingling, and pain as surgery.

How It Works

Nerve Hydrodissection consists of injecting a solution around the painful nerve. The solution releases the healthy tissue from the scar tissue untrapping the nerve. The nerve hydrodissection technique requires ultrasound guidance to identify the exact site of entrapment and localize the needle during the injection. Sometimes only one treatment is needed, but often the procedure needs to be repeated.

In some cases, surgery may be needed to prevent nerve damage, but often these treatments can prevent it. Since the procedure takes only minutes, requires no downtime and does not carry the risks of surgery, it is usually a better choice. After nerve hydrodissection, the target nerve may be numb for several days, and patients may experience a tingling or burning sensation in the treated area. These symptoms tend to resolve after several days and with active range of motion exercises as tolerated.

Conditions Treated With Nerve Hydrodissection

Nerve entrapment can affect any peripheral nerves, including:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome / Brachial Plexus Neuritis
  • Radial Nerve Or Posterior Interosseous Nerve (PIN) Entrapment
  • Pronator Teres Syndrome
  • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
  • Meralgia Paresthetica (Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Neuropathy)
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Fibular Nerve / Peroneal Nerve Entrapment Syndrome
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Morton’s Neuroma / Interdigital Neuroma
  • Scar Neuropathy

Factors That May Cause Nerve Compression

Several factors put a patient at risk for nerve compression. The most common include:

  • Sports Injuries
  • Bone Spurs
  • Tendonitis/ Tendinosis
  • Post Surgery
  • Post Fracture

Benefits Of Nerve Hydrodissection

  • Pain relief with decreased use of pain medications
  • Improved function
  • Improved Mobility
  • Improved exercise tolerance
