BONE MARROW INJECTIONS

Boost The Body’s Natural Healing Processes

Reduce pain and gradually heal damaged areas of your body

One of the most powerful healing agents within the human body comes in the form of stem cells. These cells have the amazing ability to become a variety of different kinds of cells, from tissue to bone to blood cells. At VCOM Sports & Osteopathic Medicine, we can kick-start your body’s natural healing processes to reduce pain and gradually heal damaged joints, ligaments, cartilage and more by borrowing these stem cells from the place they can most reliably be found: the bone marrow.

Why We Use Bone Marrow

Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue that resides in the hollow portions of the long, flat bones in your body such as the sternum and hip bones. It contains stem cells that ultimately become other types of cells such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, which each have their own part to play in the healing process.

Stem cells, when collected from the bone marrow, have the ability to self-replicate and become different types of cells such as cartilage cells, bone cells, muscle cells and fat cells. When we harness the stem cells’ ability to become healthy new cells with healing qualities, we can boost the body’s natural healing processes to treat arthritis, joint injuries and joint pain.

How It Works

As mentioned above, the stem cells found within the bone marrow have powerful capabilities that can be harnessed to reduce inflammation, decrease pain, promote healing and create new, healthy tissue in a damaged joint.

Your doctor will numb your hip area with a local anesthetic. Then, through a process called guided fluoroscopy, a small amount of bone marrow is taken from the back of your pelvis with a small needle.

This liquid substance, called bone marrow aspirate (BMA) is then placed into a centrifuge. This will concentrate the stem cells and their corresponding growth factors. This concentrated substance, called bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), is then placed into a syringe and injected into the most optimal locations within the injured or damaged joint.

Within a few days, the newly-placed, undifferentiated and regenerative stem cells will activate, forming healthy, new tissue to replace any damaged cartilage, ligaments, tendons or muscle in the area.

What Conditions Can Be Treated?

Because bone marrow injections harness the incredible healing abilities of your body’s stem cells, there are many conditions that can be treated using bone marrow concentrate injections.

The following are just a few of the most common uses for BMAC injections:

  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • Tendonitis or tendinosis
  • Disc damage or disease
  • Bone fractures that are not healing properly
  • Cartilage injuries
  • Muscle injuries and tears
  • Ligament damage such as sprains or tears
  • Partial tears within the tendon
  • Inflamed nerves
  • Plantar fasciitis
