PROLOTHERAPY

Natural, Noninvasive Way To Achieve Relief

A catalyst for your body’s natural healing systems

Severe joint pain can be debilitating, making it excruciating for patients to simply go through their day. Thankfully, there are ways the team at VCOM Sports & Osteopathic Medicine can help you receive relief in a natural, noninvasive way through a technique called prolotherapy.

What Is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a regenerative medicine technique that involves injecting a natural irritant into the soft tissue of a damaged or injured joint. This irritant acts as a catalyst for the healing systems that naturally occur in your body and provides pain relief.

This non-surgical regenerative treatment helps to repair, restore and strengthen a damaged joint while relieving the pain that often accompanies these kinds of injuries or conditions. Prolotherapy is most commonly used to treat back injuries, but it can also be used to great effect in other areas of the body, such as the knees, hips, shoulders and other joints and ligaments throughout the body.

How It Works

In a prolotherapy treatment, the damaged joint is injected with a natural irritant, usually made from a dextrose solution. This irritant encourages the body to produce fibroblasts, which are the body’s repairing cells. These cells then deposit new tissue fibers to repair the injury over time.

When these fibroblasts are activated, these new tissues will begin to strengthen and repair the damaged ligaments within the joint. Over time, this helps to stabilize and restore joint function, which reduces pain as the joint heals.

Generally, several shots at the injury site will be necessary for the best results. You can expect to receive anywhere between four to fifteen shots per session. Multiple sessions can also be expected to occur over the course of a few months.

What To Expect During Prolotherapy Treatment

Before you receive any prolotherapy treatment, our doctors will discuss your options with you and conduct an evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for prolotherapy. The location, pain level and severity of your injury will determine whether this particular regenerative medical treatment is right for you. For example, people with chronic conditions may not see the same benefits from prolotherapy that they would from other treatment methods, so we’ll discuss any and all alternatives to give you the best treatment possible for your individual needs.

  • If we determine prolotherapy is a good match for you, we will schedule your first session. If you are taking any anti-inflammatory medications, you’ll need to stop those two or three days before the procedure and make sure to fuel your body with filling, protein-rich foods prior to your first session.

  • Before the injection, your doctor will coat the injection site with a sterilizing solution, just as you would expect with any injection. Depending on your comfort level and the location of the injection site, we may also use a localized numbing cream or other sedation techniques to further reduce any possible discomfort.

  • The injection itself is a simple, easy process. Using a long, thin needle, your doctor will inject the natural irritant into multiple areas in and around the joint. After the injection, your doctor will cover the area to protect the injection site from infection.
